I want to alert you to a few things as we enter the cold winter months.  Please read the information below and contact me if you have any questions.

Strep Throat

There are still cases of Strep throat lurking at CFB.  There is also a virus that is mimicking the same symptoms that one has when they have Strep Throat.  The custodial staff is cleaning the school surfaces on a regular basis.  Here is some information on Strep:

Strep (Streptococcal) infections are contagious.  Strep is spread by secretions from the nose, mouth and/or throat of an infected person.  The secretions may be on the surface or in infected droplets in the air.  Please watch for the following signs and symptoms-

            Strep throat

-Typically a sudden onset of a red/sore throat

-Fever, listlessness, swollen glands, nausea and/or headache

-Tongue may be coated white and later may become bright red

            Scarlet Fever

                        -Same symptoms as above

-Fine sandpaper-like rash usually beginning on the chest and back

-The rash usually clears in a week and then peeling of the skin may occur

Students who have been diagnosed with Strep will be excluded from school for at least 24 hours after the first dose of antibiotics and until the student is fever-free without the use of fever reducing medications.  Careful hand washing with soap and water will help reduce the spread of Strep.

Outdoor recess

Please send your children prepared for outdoor recess everyday.  This means coat, snowpants, hat, mittens and boots.  Outdoor recess is scheduled if the adjusted temperature “feels like” 20 degrees or above.  The areas around CFB are wet and muddy, so we would like to have the students prepared. It is also a good idea to have your children bring in an extra pair of socks, as their feet often get wet at recess and the health office doesn’t have enough spare socks to distribute to those who need them.

Snacks

There is an opportunity every day for students to have a snack in the classroom – Please remember that our classrooms are peanut and treenut aware for the safety of our students with food allergies.   Also, please remember to pack a snack for your child.

Thank you for your attention – I hope you have a safe and healthy winter!
