In-person learning update and safety reminders

Dear Families, Parents, and Caregivers,

It has been very gratifying to see all students back in our schools over the last few weeks.  All three of our schools are now alive with the sound of class discussions, cooperative learning, and the consistent hum of a school full of students. We look forward to finishing out the school year in this fashion.

With the return of students to all our schools, we are reminded that we still need to follow our safety precautions to keep our schools open. The numbers are trending in the right direction, but we can’t let down our guard. As I am sure you are aware, there is constant updating to regulations and guidance regarding protocols at the national, state, and local levels.  Some of this guidance is conflicting, so I wanted to remind families of policies specific to the Millis Public Schools.

The Millis Public Schools Mask Policy, which requires that a face mask that covers the nose and mouth must be worn by all individuals in school buildings, on school grounds during school hours and on school transportation, remains in effect. Masks are required for spectators and participants at school athletic and extracurricular events.

Additionally, Millis Public Schools follows the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines defining a close contact as someone who has been within six feet of an infected person for a cumulative total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period.  Millis Public Schools follows the following quarantine procedure for close contacts:

  1. Close contacts must test on day 8 and if the test result is negative, may return to school on day 11 (some families may want to test earlier to determine if a student is positive; these students would still be required to test on day 8 and have a negative result to be eligible for return on day 11).  Day 1 is considered to be the day following the exposure to a positive case.

  2. Close contacts who choose not to test on day 8 or later may return on day 15.  Day 1 is considered to be the day following exposure to a positive case.

  3. In either case, students should not report to school on the scheduled day of return if they have any symptoms.

Students quarantined as close contacts as well as those who have tested positive for COVID-19 and those experiencing COVID-19 symptoms may not attend any school events, athletic contests, or practices.

We understand that this has been a long year and our families and students have been asked to make numerous sacrifices.  Our hope is that the policies above will keep our students and staff safe and keep our schools open for the remainder of the school year.

Sincerely,

Robert Mullaney
