In-person learning update

April 7, 2021

Dear Families,

At last evening’s school committee meeting, the Millis School Committee approved a Memorandum of Agreement with the Millis Teachers Association establishing Wednesday April 28 for the full in-person return of students to Millis Middle School and Monday May 3 for the full in-person return of students to Millis High School.  Clyde Brown Elementary School students returned to full in-person learning this past Monday and it has been a very positive experience for all involved!  It has been gratifying to see Clyde Brown come to life with some students attending school in-person for the first time in over a year!  I’d like to thank the Clyde Brown families and staff for their patience, flexibility and positive energy in making the return to school very smooth this week.

As we plan for the return of middle and high school students in the coming weeks, we want to remind families of procedures regarding student absences once full in-person learning five days a week begins at those schools.  Fully in-person students whose absences are not the result of quarantine by the school nurse or Millis Board of Health will follow the procedures that existed pre-COVID.  In other words, if a student is absent, s/he will be responsible for make up work missed during the absence.  These students will not be zooming into their class.  Parents are still urged to keep their students home from school with any illness or symptoms to help mitigate any spread of COVID-19 or other illness. Parents should not be “self quarantining” their students in preparation for vacations, trips, or other non-essential reasons.

As April vacation approaches, we also want to remind families of the Governor’s travel advisory that urges travelers to quarantine for 10 days following out of state travel unless receiving a negative COVID-19 test result within 72 hours prior to their return to Massachusetts.  Following each vacation we’ve had this year, there has been a spike in the number of positive cases occurring in our schools.  We ask that families be cautious when considering whether to travel or have extended family gatherings.  We have waited a long time to get our students back to fully in-person learning and want our schools to remain open.

With the return of more students to our schools, we also want to make sure we fully adhere to safety protocols to keep students and staff safe.   We know that this is a community effort, and we appreciate all that our students and families have done and sacrificed to get us to this point.  We look forward to our students’ full return for the remaining weeks of the 2020-2021 school year.

Sincerely,

Bob Mullaney

Superintendent
