March 10, 2021

Dear Millis Parents, Caregivers, and Guardians,

Yesterday the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) released its new regulations and guidance for the beginning of phased in full in-person learning for Massachusetts students for the remainder of the year.  The commissioner has determined that elementary schools (K-5) must return to full in person learning five days a week by April 5, 2021, and middle schools (6-8) must return to full in-person learning five days a week by April 28, 2021.  A date for high schools will be announced at some point in the future.  The DESE regulations include social distancing in classrooms being a minimum of three feet.  Parents may also choose to have their children in full remote learning model for the remainder of the year.

Millis Public Schools has been planning for increased in-person learning and are in preparations to comply with these new regulations.  Parents will be receiving notice from their student’s individual schools with more definitive plans for full in-person learning.  Parents/guardians of Clyde Brown students in grades 3-5, and parents/guardians of Middle and High School students will soon be receiving a survey from their child’s school where they will indicate their choice for full in person or full remote learning for the remainder of the year.  This is important information as we set up classrooms and revise procedures to handle the increased student population.

Obviously these changes will have significant impact on the in-person learning in all of our schools.  As we’ve learned throughout this pandemic, there may be times when we have to be flexible and alter some plans and protocols to better serve our students.  Please know that our staffs are hard at work making sure the return of students will be as smooth and safe as possible.  Please be on the lookout for further information from your child’s school.

Sincerely,

Bob Mullaney

Superintendent
