1-7-21 A message to MS families

Dear Middle School Families,

This morning we reflect on yesterday’s events in Washington, D.C. with a myriad of emotions that fuel our responses. We have a need to feel safe, and events over the past year have eroded that feeling for many. Our purpose as educators is to take care of our students and maintain a community where people feel safe and respected. Today, in the Middle School, our focus is on reinforcing that feeling.

Research and experts recommend a developmental approach to discussions about traumatic events. Children need to process experiences in a way that makes sense to them. In the Middle School, we will take our cues from children and listen. No doubt some will want to talk and some will not. We will maintain a typical daily routine, as research suggests, but we will also be responsive to children who might need to talk. I have recommended an approach in which we ask, What did you see? What did you hear? How do you feel? What do you wonder? Particularly in our 8th grade Civics class, a historical approach may also be part of the discussion.

Our school counselor will be available to meet with any student who might need additional support. Parents will be notified if this occurs.

We appreciate that some families have already reached out. Thank you for your understanding and support. We will do our best to maintain an atmosphere of safety, peace, calm and respect. Please feel free to contact me at 508-376-7014 with any concerns.
