MHS Virtual Health & Wellness Fair Coming January 6!
Published on Dec 15, 2020 18:56

Dear Parents/Guardians:

Millis High School is excited to announce that we will be having a health and wellness fair for students on Wednesday, January 6, 2021, a remote day for students.  The fair will be virtual and filled with valuable information in various areas of both physical health and emotional well being. Students will be exposed to a wide variety of topics throughout the day. There will be some whole school presentations and other small group activities where students will be allowed some choice in topics. The entire experience should be both educational and beneficial.

Students will attend the fair from 8:00am until 1:00pm. They will be provided a schedule to follow for the day. This school day is like any other. Therefore, attendance is expected. Below you can view the offerings for students and a short description of what they entail. If you have any questions, please contact either Lynn Molinari, School Nurse, at [email protected]  or 508-376-7010 x643, or Erin Sullivan, School Adjustment Counselor, at [email protected] or 508-376-7010 x639. We are looking forward to a really fun and informative day for students.

If for some reason you do not, and ONLY IF YOU DO NOT, want your child to participate in the health fair, or a part of the health fair, please fill out this OPT OUT FORM.  Again, you only need to fill out the form if you DO NOT want your child to participate.

Whole School Presentations:

Ashley Bendikson
A presentation focused on overcoming obstacles. Ashley went from a homeless, college dropout to class valedictorian and award winning activist. She will outline in her presentation how to stay motivated in order to achieve your dreams.
Mental Health and Resilience Presentation
Students will hear from Jordan, a young adult who has productively coped with mental health issues. Hiding his anxiety and depression behind a mask of “the kid who has it all,” Jordan turned to drinking to cope and eventually attempted to take his life. Today, Jordan is a messenger of hope who teaches that although we can’t choose the things that happen to us, we CAN choose how we cope with them.
Chris Sullivan: Dangers of Substance Use
A presentation from a former addict who discusses both the dangers of substance use and the far reaching effects it can have on a person’s life.

Smaller Group Presentations:

Boxing

Introduction to the idea of using boxing to stay fit and relieve stress. Students will get to practice an intro workout.
Self Defense 101
An introduction to the art of self defense and how to keep yourself safe.
Mindfulness
A mental state achieved by focusing one's awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one's feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, used as a therapeutic technique. Students will be led through a mindfulness exercise.
Distracted Driving
A national campaign to warn teen drivers about dangers of texting while driving and driving distracted.
Art for Stress Relief
The use of mindful art to help relieve stress.  Students will spend the time learning about and experiencing zendoodling.
Nutrition
Information on how to eat healthy to improve physical and mental health.
Yoga
An ascetic discipline, a part of which, including breath control, simple meditation, and the adoption of specific bodily postures, is widely practiced for health and relaxation. Students will have the opportunity to experience beginner’s yoga.
What are you Puffing?
A presentation on the dangers of vaping.

A presentation for juniors and seniors on consent and tips on how to keep yourself safe at college.

Thriving in the Age of Digital Distraction
In today’s world, 24/7 connectivity contributes to digital distraction and phone dependence which may hinder students' physical, mental, and emotional health. Social media platforms can foster a culture of peer comparison. How do we all shift from digital overload to more tech/life balance? Students will learn the data and be introduced to the LookUp Challenge: a student-led initiative to take a break from phones, social media and technology for a week as a school community on each students' own terms.
