List serve message-11-28-18-The importance of attendance
Published on Nov 28, 2018 13:40

Dear Small School, Big Family,

We have so many reasons to celebrate our wonderful students and their various achievements. As part of ensuring this success we believe it is important that every student is in school every day. Today I would like to share some information regarding the connection between school attendance and student success.   According to research:

  • Missing 10 percent of the school year, or about 18 days, negatively affects a student’s academic performance. That’s just two days a month and is known as chronic absence.
  • Poor attendance can influence whether children read proficiently by the end of third grade or be considered for retention.
  • Chronic absence is the single greatest predictor that a student will drop out of high school
  • The academic impact of missing that much school is the same whether the absences are excused or unexcused. What matters is attending!
  • When students improve their attendance rates, they improve their academic prospects.*Attendance Works, 2018; attendanceworks.org).

All of our schools in Millis are working to track students’ absence and tardy rates to help address any barriers.  Please avoid missing school for holiday travel. Please let your child’s principal know why your child is absent or tardy and if there is anything we can do to help.

Kind Regards,

Nancy Gustafson, Superintendent
