Heat Measures
Published on Aug 29, 2018 11:26

Dear Millis Families,

Welcome to a new school year! As you know, temperatures will be high today and tomorrow. After considering this and speaking with health professionals, we have decided to hold school as scheduled this week for students and will have several ways in which we monitor and try to mitigate the impact of the heat:

We will have extra water on hand and have new water bottle filling stations in the Middle and High schools.

We have industrial fans that circulate the air well and air conditioned areas if a student needs a break from the heat.

We will limit PE activity and recess outside.

We pull the shades to block the sun and leave upper windows open at night to allow for the cooler night air to come in, among other measures.

We will be measuring and monitoring the air temperatures inside classrooms and move students' classes as needed.

School nurses are monitoring students and addressing any concerns

We have taken measures to keep busses cooler as well.

Student well-being is our foremost concern and please know we take this seriously. The buildings are cooler than outside so we are limiting outdoor activity and re-scheduled sports activities.

Please be sure each child has a water bottle and lets an adult know if s/he is not feeling well. If s/he stays home it will be considered an excused absence if you call to let us know. Please rest assured that we will make sure that students do not remain in classrooms or areas that are too hot. Thank you.

Best regards,
