School Safety
Published on Feb 15, 2018 16:23

Dear Millis parents, caregivers and community members,

We are all heartbroken for our colleagues and their students and families in Parkland, Florida after learning of yet another tragic loss of life as a result of a school shooting. This all-too-common American story will, we hope, finally lead to decisive and quick action on the part of our lawmakers to help make our country safer through better gun control and expanded mental health support services. In the meantime, I am sure many members of our school community are asking two important questions: How safe are our schools in Millis? and How can we support our students as they learn more details about this most recent incident?

The safety and well-being of our MPS students and staff members is our first priority. Our district has collaborated effectively with our public safety departments and meet regularly to plan and implement training and protocols to keep everyone safe and to plan how to respond in the event of an incident/emergency. Please see the attached School Safety Summary http://www.millisps.org/common/pages/DisplayFile.aspx?itemId=10743713 for a description of some of the things we have done in Millis in collaboration with public safety to address schools safety. Parents or staff members with concerns about safety should feel free to contact building principals for school-specific questions.

Helping to ensure that our students are emotionally safe in relation to news about school shootings and other tragedies is another important responsibility. Please refer to guidance from the American Psychological Association for useful and practical help: http://www.apa.org/topics/violence/school-shooting.aspx.  Please reach out to any member of the administrative team if we can help support you in any way.

The Millis Police Department is also having an Open Forum at the Millis Public Library on Monday, February 19th and Thursday, March 1st from 6:30-7:30 regarding Active Shooter/Violent Intruder Preparedness. Please follow the link below to see additional information. http://www.millisps.org/common/pages/DisplayFile.aspx?itemId=10743715

My best,
