Small School, Big Future Conference this Wednesday
Chris Stevens, one of the original four team members that launched the Keurig Premium Coffee System, and Senior NFL Writer for Sports Illustrated, Greg Bedard, highlight the nearly 50 professionals that will present at the first-ever Millis High School “Small School, Big Future” Conference on Wednesday, March 8. The purpose of the day is to enhance the college and career readiness of Millis High School students, while helping them acquire the 21st century skills necessary to become successful individuals after graduation from Millis High. The event will kick off with a keynote address from Stevens from 8:15am-8:45am in the Millis High School auditorium, followed by nearly 20 break-out sessions on a variety of topics and a career fair from 8:50am-10:30am.
The event's keynote speaker, Stevens held numerous leadership roles with Procter & Gamble and Anheuser-Busch, before joining Keurig Inc. in 1996, where he was one the original four team members who launched the Keurig Premium Coffee System, which is now the number one coffee brewer in North America. Stevens oversaw the Keurig brand, sales, distribution, and marketing strategies. He left Keurig in 2013 to become an adjunct professor at the Mendoza College of Business at the University of Notre Dame, his alma mater, where he has won numerous awards for his teaching. In addition to his teaching duties, Stevens is the founder and C.E.O. of CS 74 Ventures LLC, a holding company of various initiatives in which he has invested/owns with the commitment of donating at least 50 percent of the profits to charitable causes. He also is a past board member of Mass. Crinc, the ALS Association of America, the Chicago Chamber of Commerce, and the Notre Dame Monogram Club.
Bedard, who will be running a break-out session entitled, “Getting Your Dream Job”, is a senior NFL writer who covered the Patriots, Packers and Dolphins as a newspaper beat writer and wrote a weekly column for The Monday Morning Quarterback (MMBQ) before joining Sports Illustrated as a senior NFL writer in 2015.
Following the keynote address, the day will see students rotate through three half-hour sessions, two of those in break-out seminars of their choosing, and one in the career fair. Among the industry professionals expected to present during the nearly 20 break-out sessions are representatives from Massachusetts Bay Community College, Abbvie, Inc., Salve Regina University, Gortons Seafood, Needham Bank, the Department of Homeland Security, UMass Medical School, CVS Minute Clinic, and more. They will be presenting on topics such as “STEM Careers”, “How to Work on a Team at Work”, “Entering College Undecided and Making Your First Year Count”, “Job and College Interview Tips/Creating a Great First Impression”, “Making the Most of High School”, “Tips for Time Management and Managing Stress”, and “So, You Want to go to Medical School?”
The career fair component of the day will see nearly 30 industry professionals setting up tables to present to Millis High students. Among those expected to be present are representatives from TJX Corporation, UMass Medical School, the Millis Police and Fire Departments, the Millis Library, Raytheon, the Massachusetts Special Olympics, the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, the US Army, the Peace Corps, and Brigham and Women's Hospital, as well as representatives from trades such as plumbing, and more.
This is sure to be a fantastic day of learning for our students!
