Spanish Immersion Program Broadens Horizons to Connect With Children in Nicaragua

Third grade teacher Jackie Mellin is leading an effort to become a Sister School partner with ¡Libros Para Niños! (Books for Children) in Nicaragua. “I love doing this type of work and getting the children excited about learning about a different culture,” she says. Through video chats and curricular integration, children in Grade 3 and Grade 4 in the Spanish Immersion program will learn about the country in the classroom while developing meaningful connections with children in Nicaragua.

The vast majority of children in Nicaragua will never have the opportunity to discover the magic of a well written and beautifully illustrated children’s book, let alone take one home to read. This Sister School partnership will raise money to sponsor a “Story Corner” in, La Concepción, Masaya, a marginalized community in Nicaragua. Story Corners are beautifully decorated spaces run by local facilitators who organize fun reading activities throughout the year and lend books out to children. This is the first year of what we hope will be a long lasting partnership with ¡Libros Para Niños! in Nicaragua.

For more information about how you can support our efforts, email Jackie: [email protected] or contact their US staff at [email protected]
