Superintendent Gustafson presents the NESDEC Award to Maggie Gillis and Taylor White

At the 10/18/16 School Committee meeting Superintendent Gustafson awarded Maggie Gillis with the New England School Development Council (NESDEC) Award. This highly prestigious award recognizes senior's who have demonstrated academic achievement and distinction in the areas of scholarship, leadership and citizenship. Maggie has held several notable leadership positions throughout high school. She has been on the student council since her freshman year, serving as co-president of her class for her sophomore and her junior year, and a class representative for her senior year. She is also the president of the Amnesty International Club, a member of the National Honor Society, and has been a dedicated member of the Peer Leaders Club, the Common Ground Club, and the Destination Imagination Club since her freshman year. Maggie plays the flute and has been a member and a section lead in the Millis High School Band throughout high school. She coaches soccer for 3rd-6th graders and works as a child care aide after school for Extended Day. Furthermore, Maggie is a dedicated student and always challenges herself in school. She has taken a range of Honors and AP classes throughout high school and has excelled in each and every one. At the 11/1/16 School Committee meeting the Superintendent awarded Taylor White with the New England School Development Council (NESDEC) Award. Taylor has served as co-president of the Class of 2017 in both her sophomore and junior years, after serving as a class representative freshman year. An outstanding student, Taylor is a member of the National Honor Society, and has not had a quarter or final grade below an "A" during her high school career! Last year she was the school recipient of the George Washington University School of Engineering and Applied Science Medal. She is president of our Amnesty International organization, and will serve as captain of both the winter and spring track teams this year. She is a representative to the Millis School Committee, president of our Peer Leaders organization, and a member of both Common Ground and Junior Leo's. Taylor was selected to represent our school at the Hugh O'Brien Leadership Conference as a sophomore, and is still active with the group, participating in service activities around Massachusetts. She has tutored for area families throughout high school, works in the childcare area of a local gym, and been involved in a host of other community service activities around the area. Taylor has also been a member of our band throughout her educational career. She will graduate as part of our Spanish Immersion Program and is hoping to pursue a degree in biology, biochemistry or genetic research.
