11-27-18 MS News: Canine Search of the Millis Middle/High School Campus
Published on Nov 27, 2018 10:56

Good morning,

This morning, Millis Middle/High School administrators, officers from the Millis Police Department, and canine units from neighboring law enforcement agencies conducted a sweep of the classrooms, hallways, common areas, locker rooms, and parking lots of the school campus. Millis Public Schools are committed to keeping drugs out of our schools. Today’s procedure was conducted with this goal in mind.

Today’s sweep of the campus by law enforcement officers and Millis administrators began at approximately 8:30 and concluded at 9:10. In the Middle School, only the 7th and 8th grade wings were included in the search. During first block class, the school went into a “stay in place” procedure. Students were required to stay in their classrooms and students in the hallways were escorted to their assigned classrooms. All doors were locked and teachers remained teaching. In order to search classrooms, students were called into the hallway and asked to leave all their book bags, etc. in the classroom. Once the classroom was cleared of students, a canine officer and dog entered the room and conducted a search. At no time did any student come in contact with any of the dogs. Students returned to the classroom following the search. The dogs used in the classroom searches were non-aggressive breeds such as labs and retrievers trained to conduct such searches. Once the search was completed, students resumed their normal schedule for the day. I would like to thank Millis Middle School students for their cooperation during the search.

I hope you join me in the belief that students deserve schools that are free of illegal drugs. I am pleased to report that nothing of concern was found in the Middle School. We will conduct similar searches along with the High School in the future with the goal of keeping our school drug-free.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely, Maureen Knowlton, Principal
